Dramatis Personae

  • Ekaterini Tsakalidis aka The Lady of Laundry (played by Chepe): Godling of Hygieia and Minerva. Face-changing clothes-horse with history as a Mob assassin and crime-scene cover-up artist. Tagline: “Never let them see you sweat.”
  • Tercallus aka Callum “Cal” Parker (played by Will): Theogenic Demigod. Thrill-seeking, jaded, time-warping high stakes gambler coalesced into existence over a decade ago in an alley outside a casino for reasons unknown. Tagline: “Time is malleable.”
  • Theroikon (played by Jenn D.). Theogenic demigod. Patron of urban wildlife. Shapeshifter, naturalist, and the party’s literal though somewhat reluctant combat monster. Tagline: “Mess with my people and I’ll show you a silent spring.”
  • Winfred Timotheos aka The Friend (Played by Chris D.): Demigod of Philotes. The friendliest person you could hope to meet in Las Vegas and leader of a philanthropic Society/Cult. Tagline: “You know they say that a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet, and it’s nice to meet you.”
  • Arnold Zahn (NPC): Son of Ares. Has a deathwish. Drunk. Tagline: “How about that drink?”
  • Julie Wilms aka The Assistant (Winfred’s Ally): Human, probably. Former covert agent turned convert. Now spends her time assisting, guarding, and herding Winfred. Tagline: “Time to go, Sir.”
  • Sarah J. Pokorny (NPC): Daughter of Thoth. Magician. Capable as hell. Tagline: “I may be in a wheelchair but I’ll kick your ass.”

Previously . . .

The last fight of the night was a group of wolves against a demigod where the wolves conquered, the last one standing ascends to godhood by absorbing the aetheric energy. Theroikon and a few others actually want to speak with the wolf who is in a crowded hall. Theroikon inquires about the wolf’s background and current condition, and it’s confused that someone can actually speak to him. They were kept in iron boxes previously, an iron den. There’s other. . . things there but he’s not sure if they’re animals.

The wolf gets taken away as Theroikon tries to consider how to go along with the wolf, perhaps by changing into a cockroach, at least until Winfred points out that they’ve obviously got something flagging the use of aetheric powers which Ekaterini tests by summoning a hat from elsewhere. Guards immediately surround her and warn her once more, warning her once more and saying that the next time will be resolved by revoking their ticket, which Jay is rather upset about considering that it’s his ticket they got in on.

The group has head back to the Regency Towers after watching the fights. Lots of betting, lots of money flowing, lots of criminals there, both those connected to the divine and those that weren’t. Just a mixed crowd of people. There’s not too much that drives them towards figuring out what is going on with the group. Some suggest just reporting them to the Kindly Ones and seeing what’s happening or reporting it to someone in general to find out what’s happening with their promises of providing sanctuary. They’ve got another three days before a fight probably happens, and Jay is happy about making all that money from so he’d be happy to get them back in, as long as they don’t use their powers again.

There’s some suggestion about getting someone into the back areas to let them scout out, though without using their powers due to being tracked. Pokie offers creating shrouds to help prevent tracking and obfuscating various senses, able to make three shrouds total. They’re able to recall that there’s various security systems along with keycards to get in and out of secure areas. Their security is pretty top notch.

Ekaterini calls some of her underworld contacts to figure out the criminal types have in connection with the group. Normally when something like this comes up, they would hire local muscle when setting up shop, but the fighting league didn’t do so, bringing in their own and as far as they can tell, it’s all happening under a single roof. Their security forces were talking in a strange language, called Carni-cant. Julie, having taken some time previously to wear a button cam, uses the photographs from it to run facial recognition on staff members to get information at Ekaterini’s behest. They’re all reported as being publicly dead from over a century ago, during the years of the previous Harrowing. Ekaterini asks if Cal can inquire of his divine contacts if there was a strange carnival during the previous Harrowing.

Mitzidu, Cal’s contact, mentions a legend that every time a Harrowing occurs, so does a carnival of kind that recruits like-minded individuals, disappearing before it starts, keeping them outside of the Harrowings as promised. Whomever wins the contest wins a place within the sanctuary.

There’re no death certificates for demigods among the security team like there is for the seeming mortals. It’s entirely possible that they’re just tricking those fighting. Asking about the fighters that have been injured, Jay is able to tell them that the fighting club seems to have their own facilities to heal the fighters between fights.

Cal calls their contact with the Kindly Ones, Archie, asking to meet at the Black and Blue Diner again, but says that they could take over the phone line if his phone is secure. It obviously isn’t, so a quick spell is cast. Cal tells his contact about the fight club they visited earlier and about the ascended wolf and asks about whether or not it’s normal or allowed. The obvious answer is no, it violates the spirit and letter of the rules and he says that he knew that knowing the group would be a problem. They’ve located the Demigon Circus and he tells them to meet him at the Black and Blue Diner immediately and folks get shoved into the Maybach.

Archie isn’t too happy, and asks if they actually fought in any of the battles, that he’d have to kill them if they did. The group obviously says they didn’t fight, and talk about one of the fighters that is on his ninth fight. Apparently he finds it interesting that the one that’s supposed to be knowing about it was taken out, Solomon Gold, who is currently in a vegetative state. It seems that Gold had been doing research on the circus for several hundred years, some dating back over seven hundred years.

There’s still a prize though, but it comes through its own issue, namely in violating the Compact which apparently everyone agrees to follow the moment they’re born. At this moment he wants the location where the fights are taking place and they’d send teams of Furies. Archie tells that group that the Chairman goes by the name of The Great Malingo and is kind of a god, and they really don’t want to be there to see what is going on. They ask about what is wrong with the fighting ring if The Souk is able to operate, in this case it’s because The Souk was grandfathered in, existing long before the Kindly One organization and they allow him to continue to exist in trade for services rendered. Ekaterini still really wants to see what a full-on Fury assault looks like though Archie still says no, at least no officially. Archie tells them that their compensation will be decided on by the council before shoving a whole waffle in his mouth and leaving.

Aftermath

Back at the Towers, they have Julie hack into local surveillance cameras only to see several panel vans pull in. A man exits and points something at the cameras killing them. There’s no real way to observe things from where they’re standing. This just leaves them with sitting and waiting for the news.

After Action Report (GM)

Had to cut this one short as my mother needed my help with something. But it was a frustrating session. The PCs didn’t do the thing I thought they’d do. Instead, they did the thing that was probably the most sane in-game and logical thing to do: they didn’t investigate the Sanctuary, but instead handed them over to the Kindly Ones…who promptly went in and killed lots of people. It might be salvageable, the people operating the Sanctuary could take umbrage for getting the Kindly Ones on their tail, or, more logically they simply fold up and move on for now, It depends I guess. I’ll need to think about it some.

Other Notes

None.

Soundtrack

“Awoo” by Sofi Tukker feat. Betta Lemme (Opening Song)
“Burn my Shadow” by UNKLE (Cleaning out the Sanctuary by the Kindly Ones)
“She’s Long Gone” by The Black Keys (Closing Song)
